Amid the present pressure of public business of various kinds, and the number of meetings daily demanding attention, the Mayor does not think it would be expedient to call a public meeting in Wellington on the subject of the Indian Famine—for the relief of which he has been asked by the Lord Mayor of London to solicit colonial aid ; but he deems it his duty to bring the urgent necessity of the case before the citizens, leaving it to them to take such means as may be considered best in the circumstances.
