A man named Corapeigne died here suddenly yesterday. He had only recently received a legacy of several hundred pounds from a relative in England. Nelson, Wednesday.
The criminal sittings of the Supreme Court concluded late last night. Ellen Wan, charged with the manslaughter of her illegitimate child, was discharged, owing to the absence of Hr. Thorpe, of Westport, the principal witness, but was bound over in her own recognizances of £IOO to appear again if required. William McCall and Harry Smith, of Keefton, charged with larceny, were both acquitted. Chuistchiibch, Wednesday.
Mr. Driver, of Dunedin, who is now here, has concluded the sale of Rhodes and Deadham’s estate, near Timaru, consisting of 9350 acres freehold, 800 head pure-hred' cattle, and 12,000 sheep, for £115,000, to Heming and Hedley, of Oamaru. In reply to the Agricultural and Pastoral Association the Government has made concessions both in charges for goods and passengers on railways. The Star this evening says a “ rumor is afloat to the effect that the new insurance company is to be called “ The Alliance and the capital has been fixed at two millions sterling. There are hazy reports as to various meetings of promoters, but there is an indefinable atmosphere of mystery about the proceedings which it is absolutely impossible to penetrate.” Since the appearance of the above, it is rumored that the cause of delay in issuing the prospectus is the difficulty of getting a suitable directory. At a public auction Union Insurance shares to-day sold at 9s. premium : 260 at Bs. ; 40 at Bs. 6d. The trial of Karl Kehede for murder occupied the Supreme Court all day, and will probably be finished late to-night. Balclutha, Wednesday.
The Presbyterian congregation of Balclutha have accepted the tender of Mr. James Young for the erection of a new church, at a contract price of £2330. Dunedin, Wednesday.
The High School Commission will commence to-morrow. The proceedings will be private. The following sentences wore passed at the Supreme Court this morning:—James Cheeseman (33), convicted of manslaughter, one mouth, without hard labor; Thos. Walker Languet, embezzlement, (five charges), two years. Charles John Penny end was found guilty of forgery, and George King and Thomas King, for maliciously killing a calf, were found guilty. Thos. Jackson, charged with mali-
ciously maiming a horse, was acquitted. Geo. Proudfoot’s trial is fixed for October 15, before a special jury. Sir. Denuiston will prosecute for the Crown.
The Crown Prosecutor stated to-day that he would intimate to-morrow whether or not George Jones’ libel case would be taken this session.
A few gentlemen met yesterday afternoon for the purpose of forming a new insurance company here.
