The following took passages, but did not go Messrs. E. Malland, J. Ewves, and P. Wooderin. LATEST WAR NEWS. THE RUSSIANS SUCCESSFUL. TURKS SACRIFICING THEIR MEN. General Ignatieffi is in disgrace, and has gone to Kiev. Gambetta’s sentence has been confirmed. Nothing offioial'has been heard of Mehemet . All’s movements. LATER INTELLIGENCE. London, September 24. Plevna is nearly surrounded by the Russian forces. Hafiz Pasha has reached Dobrinskow with supplies. His convoy was attacked by fifteen battalions of Russian infantry and three regiments of cavalry ; but they were defeated, according to the Turkish account. Sulieman Pasha renewed the assault at Fort Nicholas at the Schipka Pass last Friday, but without success. 20,000 Turks were sacrificed in various attempts to take the Schipka Pass. The inquest on the bodies washed ashor® from the Avalanche has terminated. The jury returned an open verdict. The Sydney Morning Herald’s special o£ the 24th says the accounts of last Friday’s fighting near Biela have been greatly exaggerated. The Turks admit that the action was indecisive. The attack was made upon Russian entrenched positions at Chairktvy and Chernova, commanding the main road to Biela, and were successfully repulsed. The Czarewxch is receiving large reinforcements. Osman Pasha has been urged to make a sortie in order to effect a junction of the two forces. The Times says the , Austrian Ambassador at Constantinople had a positive interview with the Sultan, and remonstrated against the continued atrocities. He hinted at mediation, and showed that moderation would be politic, declaring that Germany would not be indif. ferent to Russia’s humiliation. FURTHER NEWS. DEFEAT OF ISMAIL PASHA. Bombay, September 24. A Russian official despatch says the Turks resumed bombarding the Nicholas redoubt at the Schipka Pass, and then assaulted it unsuccessfully. The fighting continues. In Asia General Tergukassoff defeated Ismail Pasha with great loss. A Turkish official despatch says a large Turkish convoy of ammunition is within two hours’ march of Plevna. The result of the fighting ’at Biela is still indecisive. AUSTRALIAN NEWS. Melbourne, Saturday.
