SANDON.
(FROM ODB OWN CORRESPONDENT.) September 17. There has been some excitement during the past week in Sandon, caused by the agencies of two banks opening business here. For sometime past it'was thought that one bank would be a great convenience, and might possibly pay. A correspondence ensued between some of the leading people in business here and the Bank of Australasia, which: was the means of bringing Mr. Sawer, the manager at Wellington, and Mr. Greig, of Palmerston; here, to see what prospect there was for an agency. The district was well canvassed, and these gentlemen decided to commence forth, with, and took temporary premises opposite Mr. Tompkia’s store, and left Mr. Caverhill, late of Canterbury, in charge.. The Bank of New Zealand heard of this, and immediately sent Mr. Steele, who is well known in Wellington, and. Mr. Stevenson, of Wanganui, to see what prospect they had, and after a little canvassing they also decided to open an agency, and have commenced- business adjoining the. Bank of Australasia, They have since called for tenders for the erection of a building, but have not ‘ yet decided upon the site. The Bank of Australasia has purchased a quarter of an acre at the junction of fouc roads, one of the most valuable sites'iU the township,, from Mr. • Williams, for £2OO. You can well understand that we felt here a little out of our usual track when iio fewer than seven gentlemen connected with bank's were dining together at Mr. Oakley’s, and we look upon it as a red-letter day. It is hardly to be expected that both banks will pay the. first year.; but when our flour mill is erected and other public works are in hand, the trade and commerce of- the place must necessarily increase.- May > success ? attend both * institutions. The .Vigilance' Committee are endeavoring to get Sandon and Carnarvon disconnected from the present Manawatu Highway Board, as they ,think it far too large; They wish these two districts to be proclaimed a separate board under the Act.
The Anglican Church is now finished, and it certainly reflects great credit on the con-
tractor, Mr. Cleghorn. •; The whole of the work is completed in a thoroughly workmanlike manner and ‘to the, entire satisfaction of the building committee. It is really an ornament to the township, audits interior is equally as attractive in appearance as the exterior.: Mr. Tringham, of Wellington, was the architect. The pulpit, font, and communion table are being made by friends in the district, and are to be a gift to the church. A series of entertainments are to be given, consisting of readings and vocal and instrumental music, in aid of the building fund, for which support has been promised by friends in other townships. I have just heard that Messrs. Bowe and Son's sawmill at Carnarvon was burnt down this morning at two o’clock. It is supposed to be the act of an incendiary. The property was not insured.
