There was heavy cannonading on the 15th at Plevna. The Russian loss included 400 officers and 1200 men killed, with 300 of the Roumanian forces. A Turkish official despatch of the eleventh says that the Russians evacuated Timova in order to reinforce Biela. SuUeman Pasha telegraphs on the 15th that the Russians continue to hold their positions. Mehemet Ali on the 16th defeated with great loss the 12th Russian Army Corps and pursued them to the banks of the Lem. Colonel Baker is operating successfully in command of the cavalry, Bombay, Sept. 19, 9.7 p . m . A Turkish official despatch says that Nicholas (sic) was abandoned through motives of strategy. The Russian assault was repulsed with enormous losses. Rumors of an armistice and mediation are semi-officially denied. PLEVNA COMPLETELY INVESTED. RUSSIAN LOSSES ENORMOUS. SANGUINARY ENGAGEMENTS. ARDAHAN EVACUATED. #• ~. ‘ THE TURKS RECOVER THREE LOST POSITIONS. SULIBMAN PASHA NOW HOLDS ;: TRAJAN’S ROAD. , Bombay, September 18. A Russian official despatch reports that the Turks on the 12th recovered three positions lost on the 11th. The Russians have completely invested Plevna by lines of entrenchment. The Russian losses have been enormous. Sulieman Pasha has silenced the Russian batteries, and now holds Trajan’s-road. ’ The Russian army, after several sanguinary engagagements; has; wholly withdrawn to the west of the Jantra.
