THE MUNICIPAL ELECTION.

■ The election of twelve municipal Councillors —threri for each of ’ the fdrir Wards iri the' borough—viz., Cook, Te Aro, Lambton, a-nd Thorndon, took place on September 13.’ There were twenty-three candidates to represent the twelve seats. For: Cook Ward seven gentlemen sought the suffrages of the electors; for .TV Aro, -fivq;. .for Lambton,,.four; and for; Thorndpn, seven. , Thera was. a more than, 1 usual apiouut of,interest excited; in; this election, as it !was known that the seats would be keenly contested, and the result proves, that such was the case.' During the’day there was not much excitement in the streets; but cabs were pretty busily employed in conveying voters to the poll; and it' was evident that the canvassers of the several candidates were active in seeing that as few votes as possible should ‘be, lost through not mustering their men. Shortly after the close of the poll at six 6’cloqk )a considerable number of persons assembled at the several polling places, awaiting the result. They had to exercise tfleir patience, however, tor seine time,, for. it.was not until eight 1 o’clock that anything was gleaned as to thri state of the balloting papers. At that time, however, the members were announced (but not officially) at the sideroom of the Odd Fellows] Hall, 1 the polling 1 place for Lambton Ward, and shortly afterwards the returns were received from; the other wards. Iri reference to this, election we may say that l the mode in which it was, conducted on the part of some of the officials, was .not altogether satisfactory; arid was the, subject of general .j-qjnark. Ob- 1 -jectioris,! we understand, -were yaised, to Mr.. ■Jitiliri J and, the {lVlayor being .legally qualified tp ypte,i which', objections will probably, ibe the,|subject : ' of further 1 discussion, if. not litigation. If Mr. Mills be reafly disqualified, it will set aside his return fdri Lambton Ward., If,the, objection-to the Mayor 1 is a valid one, we pyesbrie it will incapacitate him, from standing for the civic chair I ' on the next vacancy.; Whether there- is anything i in,- ti>» objections raised from a legal point of view it is, not our place to decide. The following is tlie result of the, polling for the, several wards. Due notice will,be given of the time at which, the official declaration will he made, hut ;it is not likely that it will materially-affect the result. - iThe first three are elected in each case,;- ; , •' ,{" '.{, .. ,{.
