CAMBRIDGE LOCAL EXAMINATIONS

TO THE EDITOR OE THE NEW ZEALAND TIMES. Sir, — Your readers after perusing the letter of Mr. C. C. N, Barron in your issue of yesterday (Friday), will be somewhat surprised to learn that that gentleman had nothing whatever to do with the Cambridge Local Examination held at Wellington College at the commencement of this year, the results of which have just beeu published and given rise to the present controversy. Only two of these Cambridge examinations have been held, and Mr. Barron’s remarks (though he did not say so) applied only to the first of these, which was held at Christmas, 1875. At the second, held in the February of this year, I presided, at the request of Mr. Wilson. It was I who superintended the examination, collected and endorsed the papers, delivered them up at the close of the week's examination to the Governor’s aide-de-camp at Government House, and received the fee for so doing, and Mr. Barron had no more to do with it than the man in the moon.

Having now been fbreed to take part in this foolish controversy, of which I think “ Inquirer” ought to be ashamed, I will add, without entering into detail, that I speak from my own knowledge when I say that the examination was conducted in a thoroughly fair and impartial manner, and that there is no ground whatever for the innuendoes that have been thrown out against it.—l am, &0., John Gammkll, 8.A., (Lond.) Collegiate School, Masterton, September 15. ,
