THE RACE FOR THE ST. LEGER. DESPERATE FIGHTING AT PLEVNA. FThe following telegram was received at the New Zealand Times office at ten minutes past three o’clock this morning];— London, September 13, 8.25 a.m. The race for the St. Leger resulted—Silvio, Ist; Golightly, 2nd; Manmuvre, 3rd. The Australian and New Zealand mails have been delivered. Bombay, Sept. 14, 6.3.1p.m. A Russian official despatch from headquarters at Porodin says that the general assault on Plevna was made on the 11th. There was desperate fighting. The Russians captured four redoubts. The Russian loss included two generals killed and one wounded. They had five thousand wounded, whilst the number of killed was unknown. At daybreak on the 12th they occupied the conquered positions. LATEST WAR NEWS. THE BOMBARDMENT OF PLEVNA. THE STRENGTH OF THE ARMIES ENGAGED. THE RUSSIANS CAPTURED ANOTHER HEIGHT. A CAVALRY ENGAGEMENT. NEW BRIDGE OVER THE DANUBE. Bombay, 12th, midnight. , ' A Russian official despatch - says that the bombarding of Plevna had been, continued with unabated force until the evening of the 10th. The Russians have captured another height commanding the town. The Russian cavalry defeated the Turkish cavalry on the Sophia-road. Bombay, September 13. Plevna is closely invested, and the sorties of the Turks have been repulsed. It is estimated that the Russiau-Roumanian army numbers eighty thousand, with three hundred and fifty-six guns. The Turkish army is calculated at sixty thousand men, with two hundred and thirty guns. • A new bridge has been put up at Nicopolis. LATEST EUROPEAN NEWS. THE ATTITUDE OF AUSTRIA. Bombay, Sept. 12, 12.15 p.m. The Emperor of Austria at a banquet proposed the health of his dear friend and ally, the Tsar of Russia. Gambetta has been sentenced to three months’ imprisonment and a thousand francs fine. Sept. 13, 3.45 p.m. Gambetta appeals against the sentence of the Court.
