BY TELEGRAPH. LYTTELTON. Friday. Arrived: The s.s. Eashy and Clematis, ketch, both from ■Wellington. Sailed; The-Maud Graham, for Napier ; Omaha, for the Chatham Islands.

The s.s. Murray arrived in port from Nelson at 2.30 p.m. yesterday. She left there at half-past 5 o’clock the previous evening, and owing to the N.W. gale and thick weather, had to come round Stephens Island. The Murray will sail for Nelson and West Coast ports this afternoon. . . The inclement state of the weather yesterday.prevented the s.s. Claud Hamilton from discharging her cargo from Melbourne, which consists of about 147 tons. Her departure for Melbourne and Hobarton, via the South, has been postponed till this afternoon. 4 The s.s. Taranaki went North, via Nelson, Picton, and the West Coast, yesterday morning at 9 o’clock. Thep.s. Manawatu left Wanganui at 3 p.m. on Thursday, experienced a strong westerly gale down the coast, and arrived here at 4.30 a.m. yesterday. She will sail for Wanganui this afternoon. _ The s.s. Tanpo sailed for Auckland, via the East Coast, yesterday at 1.30 p.m. The s.s. Jane Douglas arrived in port from Wanganui at 4.30 a.m. yesterday, having left there at 3 p.m. on Thursday, and experienced a heavy N.W. gale down. The Jane Douglas will sail for Foxton this afternoon.

The departure of the s.s. Tui for Foxton has been postponed till this evening. _ _ It has been reported in town that the ship Christian McAusland, one of Messrs. Patrick Henderson and Co.’s Albion Line of ships, and a sister ship to fhe Jessie Roadman, has been wrecked off Batavia by striking on a reef. All hands were saved. The brig Robin Hood sailed yesterday afternoon for Newcastle.

The Tweedsdale, which has arrived in Melbourne from the Clyde during the present month, has the distinguishing characteristic of being the first fourmasted sailing ship which has ever been to that port, or perhaps any of the Australian colonies. Several of the ocean steamers which were or are engaged in carrying the San Francisco mails have an equal number ; but with them square canvas is only carried on the fore and main masts, whereas the Tweedsdale sets square sails on all except the fourth or jiggermast. The idea for this departure (says the Argus) from the orthodox number, is to lighten the ship aloft from the tremendous leverage of unnecessarily heavy spars and a superfluous spread of canvas, and by having smaller and lighter yards, with sails in proportion, it is expected that the vessel will be much ipore manageable than under the present style, and that there will be less risk of dismasting. The new idea can scarcely be said to have had a fair trial, in so far as the Tweedsdale is concerned, for she is deeply laden ■with a deadweight cargo, the leading items of which are heavy castiron pipes and pig iron, and there was no such thing as getting a good day’s run out of her, 290 miles being the greatest recorded in the log. The passage, which was extended to ninety-four days from Greenock to Port Phillip, was also greatly hindered by adverse gales, encountered during the first ten days out. The Tweedsdale was built this year by Messrs. Barclay, Curie, and Co., of Glasgow, for Messrs. J. and A. Roxburgh, of the same place, and her dimensions are as follows: —Length between perpendiculars, 214 ft.; beam. 37ft.; and depth of hold, 22ft.; the register being 1403 tons. The ship is built on handsome lines, and is an excellent specimen of the work for which the Clyde bears such a great name.
