Public Notices ZEALAND LOAN AND MERCANTILE AGENCY COMPANY (LIMITED). The Fourth Call of Ten Shillings per Share on the Third Issue of the Company will he payable at the Company’s Office on MONDAY, the Ist OCTOBER, 1877. By order of the Board of Directors. CHARLES 'IRVIN ELLER, HE RATEPAYERS OF TE ARO WARD. Ladies and Gentlemen,— Allow me to thank you for the confidence you evince by again proposing me as a candidate for the representation of Te Aro Ward in the City Council. My experience of the Corporation is, that the hard work is not confined to general meetings of the Council, and, therefore, the man who wishes to be of use to the ratepayers must take a lively interest the details—such as public works, drainage, and wharf committees. This is where the real work occurs, and if during the pass few months I have merited your, approbation, and you think it advisable to re-elect, me, I can only say that my best exertions shall be used to further the interests of Te Aro Ward in particular and the city in general. I beg to remain. Wellington, Sept. 5, 1877. TO THE RATEPAYERS OF COOK; WARD. Ladies and Gentlemen, — Having been requested by numerous ratepayers to offer myself as a candidate for the representation of Cook Ward, I beg to give you a few remarks with regard to my opinions. I am not good at speechifying, but I can assure you that should you return me as your representative, X' shall devote my utmost energies to serve you, and in doing so myself, since our interests are identical. For the Managing Director. Auckland, September 1. Ladies and Gentlemen, Yours faithfully, ‘ EDWARD DIXON.
It would be my study to see that all matters before the Council should be discussed in a dispassionate manner. On general matters I may say that I am strongly in favor of the drainage scheme as proposed by Mr; Climie, also of the reclamation of the Te Aro foreshore; but I should strongly oppose the expenditure of the ratepayers’ money in the extravagant venture of erecting a town hall. The roads and streets in Cook Ward I should do my best to have placed in proper passable repair, and where nothing but mud and swamp now exist, to replace them by good metalled ways. It also appears to me that the city is not sufficiently lighted, and I should be in favor of having an additional number of Corporation gas-lights, and having others erected in many dangerous parts of this city. I have purposely abstained from holding any meetings either inmy own or any other licensed house. I have heard it reported that I have entered this contest with the view of dividing the votes, but I deny such an accusation, and am “ going in” solely “on my own bottom, and paying my own expenses.” Having plenty ; of time and means to devote to the interests of Cook Ward and the city generally, I shall be prepared to study the interests of the burgesses.—l am, &c., N. B. MUBPHY, City Hotel, Clyde-quay.
