The Wesipori Times calls upon Messrs. McMeckan, Blackwood, and Co. to fulfil their promise that their steamers would call off the Bailer as soon as a lighthouse should be erected off Cape Foulwind, and a steam tender provided. Both these conditions, says the Times, now exist, the lighthouse having been illuminated for several months, and the p.s. Result fitted with new engines and boilers. The Otafjo Times states, in explanation of the Wanaka's trip to the Bay of Islands, that that port is now Included in the company's route; chiefly as a coaling station. Of her line, the Wanaka was the pioneer boat in that direction, and shipped enough coal there to last her until she returned again. The other steamers will do the same, and at the same time aid most materially in developing a trade between the Bay and Auckland. The Taupo followed the Wanaka to the Bay, and had quite a number of passengers. Tiie dipper ship Lucille, on her maiden voyage from Liverpool to Melbourne, had a rough time when running down her easting. Tremendous bodies of water rushed into her on either side and over the poop, filling her to the rail, and leaving at times only the poop and topgallant forecastle visible. The force of the sea tore up all the starboard side of the poop, and fairly gutted the captain’s cabin, and also the cabin of the apprentices. The store rooms and sail lockers were all cleared of their contents, and the same seas also made a clean sweep on deck, winches, capstans, and lashed spars being powerless to resist the immense pressure. Seven of the crew were more or less injured by the loose spars floating about, and two or three of them are still suffering from their bruises. When the hurricane had spent itself, 1 it left a heavy sea behind it, and for the safety of the ship and all on board Captain Scott deemed it necessary to jettison portion of the cargo.
