The correspondent of the Sydney Morning Herald at New Caledonia, writin'g to that journal of July 19th, says: —The mail contract, commencing in August, has been secured by the New Zealand Company. May the service continue to be as well rendered as hitherto. During the past month the events of most interest have been the arrival of an unusually large number of passengers from France and Australia. The, Bossuet, ship, arrived from Marseilles ten days since, with eighty-three passengers, including many Government officials. By the mail news was received which has given rise to masy rumors, causing, anxiety respecting nickel, and the closing of 6ne of the principal mines, or rather the' suspension of operations for the present, seemed to warrant the fears entertained by many who view things simply upon the surface. The fact of nickel not being freely bought in the Home markets is supposed by some to prove its being a failure. The uncertain state of politics in Europe exercises a paralysing' influence over even old-established industries, then how much more with regard to new ones 1 . A satisfactory method of reducing the ore has been discovered and adopted, and works are established and in course of building in France for the smelting of the ore ; and those beat capable of judging assert that' time' only is needed, and a more tranquil state of politics in Europe, in order to ensure the full development' of the nickel riches of this colony. Fluctuations may be expected, and reasonably so, in a comparatively new industry, but the fact of nickel having a reliable value, and of its being applicable to such a variety of uses, is a guarantee to all lucky possessors of good nickel mines that their property is of great value. A Prominent citizen took it into his head to rise early the other morning and take some healthful' exercise before breakfast time.' When he got to the first bar he.concluded to go in and take a cocktail; a man needed some little stimulant when he broke over old habits and got up so early. Just one cocktail, and not another drop before breakfast. When he got inside the bar two men were engaged in an argument on the Eastern question, in which he became SO interested that he forgot all about his walk until it was time to go home to breakfast, and every time one or the other of the disputants would get the best of the argument, ho would “ treat the house." When the citizen got hotqe the breakfast was cold, his legs unsteady and his voice thick, and he spoke to his wife with a Russian accent. When she asked him how he enjoyed his walk, and if he didn’t know that breakfast was cold, andiWhat made him look and actsoqueerly, he said : Bin ’gaged in a nominated scushion er Rooshiu war and tookernextraco ktailortwo,” His wife was surprised at the facility with which he had learned a foreign language, but expressed herself in effect that early rising and walks before breakfast were not as conducive to health as lying in bed till breakfast was ready. strangers paying a visit to Wellington, and countrysettlers arriving in town, are very often at a loss to know winch is the best house or ■ cheapest general drapery establishment to visit for buying drapery and clothing.
