GREECE SENDS A PACIFIC NOTE. rREVTEKS SPECIAL 10 PSBSS AGENCY.J [The following telegram was "received at the STew Zealand Times office at 10 minutes past three o'clock this mornng]:— Bombay, August 29.' A despatch from Sulieman Bey dated 26th August says that ten days of indecisive fighting occurred, during which the Russians were attacked unsuccessfully. The Turks hold positions dominating the Russians' line of retreat. The Russian loss was four thousand killed alone. A Russian official despatch of August 29th says :—" We maintain our positions ; the Turks hold the adjoining heights." The Russians are massing before Plevna. Bombay, August 29, 12.33 p.m. Russian official despatches say that the Turkish firing on Sunday afternoon and Monday at the Shipka Pass was feeble. The Porte has complained to England of the Greek armaments. ■■'•■ Turkey threatened to send troops to attack Athens in the event of a rising in Thessaly. England remonstrated with Greece, who sent the Porte a pacific note. Bombay, August 20, 11.19 a.m. A despatch from Sulieman Bey says that his entrenchments are 150 paces from the Russian positions. The Roumanian division has been ordered to operate in the rear of Plevna. Bombay, August 31. The Russian loss at the Shipka Pass was 2480 wounded, including 95 officers. Th number of killed was unknown. Turks, Plevna, 755 ; 200 guns (sic). AUSTRALIAN NEWS. Sydney, Friday. The markets continue dull, and prices remain unchanged since last quotations. Arrived—Easby.
