WRECK OF THE ROBINA DUNLOP.
The Court of Inquiry into the circumstances connected with the wreck of the Kobina Dunlop, near the mouth of the Turakina River on the 13th inat., gave judgment that the ship was lost in consequence of the culpable negligence pf the master, John Graham. The Court,” therefore, decided to suspend his certificate for two years, and to express its opinion that the chief officer, George Yon Schoen. merited severe censure. Mr. Stafford asked for costs. The Court said the usual practice in such cases was for the Crown to pay costs. After some observations from Mr. Quick, as to what effect the decision would have on Captain Graham’s certificate as mate, Mr. Stafford pointed out that the 16th section of the Act empowered the Governor to issue a lower certificate” than that suspended, and Captain Graham could send in a petition for this to he done.
The Court concurred. Mr. Stafford wished the Court to express disapproval of the conduct of the collector at Wanganui, who, at the preliminary inquiry, had taken upon himself to exonerate Captain Graham from all blame, which was im part of his duty, and might have caused considerable difficulty. The Court was of opinion that this did not come within their province, but rested with the Customs authorities. The Court then rose.
