In our issue of yesterday we referred to the telegraphic correspondence which has passed between the Auckland Grand Lodge of Good Templars and Dr. Wallis, in order to show that the lodge is not dealing fairly with the honorable member for Auckland City West. In addition to thequestions submitted to Dr. Wallis by the lodge was another which that gentleman answered in the negative; but the “ Grand Secretary ” of the’ Lodge has been careful to suppress this, in order apparently to make the public believe that Dr. Wallis was prepared to give an unconditional support to the Local Option Bill, which was not the fact. Dr. Wallis, whilst a supporter of the temperance cause, is not blind to a sense of justice which would give compensation to a publican deprived of his license, through no fault of his own, by the operation of the Act ; and those who cannot see that this principle is sound and equitable must indeed be fanatics.
