(per aeawata at the bluff.) Melbourne, August 13. The week has been generally dull. Dr. Macartney’s case has been the principal subject in the Assembly. A new writ has been issued for South Gipps Land. The Government is endeavoring to pass a resolution to relieve Macartney from his present difficulty. The ship Macduff has arrived from London with smallpox on board. There are several cases, and some of a serious nature, including the captain and chief officer. The Lusitania was forty days and four hours on the passage. ' In the action Ireland v. Captain Chapman of the Royal Navy a verdict was returned for the defendant by three-feurths of the jury. An exhibition of merino wool will be held in February, when several prizes of fine gold cups will be awarded. There are eighty-five acceptances for the Melbourne Cup. Business continues to improve. The weather is very dry. A young man named William Scully died from the effects of injuries received in a prize fight on Sunday.
