Masters of vessels bound to Nelson are warned that the Harbor-master there states that Captain Dillon, of the steamer Wallace, reports the buoy at French Pass, now on the eastern qhore, will be replaced in its proper position as soon as the Stella returns from Cape Maria Van Diemen, where she is now delivering building material for a lighthouse. The trial of a f rpedo vessel, the Lightning, was made in Stokes Bay on May 24, and the mean speed of her six runs was lei knots per honr. She is 84ft. long by 10ft. loin, beam, and is to be armed with the Whitehead torpedo, which will be discharged from her forecastle. The following formal judgment of the Court appointed to inquire into the loss of the ketch Quiver, was given by W. Donald, Esq., R.M., at the Resident Magistrate’s Court, Lyttelton.—” It appears from the evidence produced before the Court, that if the - Quiver carried any lights, of which there is a great : doubt, they were evidently, from the direction in which the two vessels were heading, shut out from the Taranaki; and although the captain of the Quiver says that he considered himself in danger when the steamer was four miles off, still he took no steps to avoid a collision, either by going about or standing In-shore (there being nothing to prevent his doing so), or by showing a light to Indicate his whereabouts to the Taranaki, until so close that it was impo sible to avoid a collision. Therefore, X, consider that the Quiver was alone to blame for the colli-ion. The allegation of the master and seamen of the Quiver, that the look-ont of the Taranaki was off duty, was unsustained, and on oath contradicted."
