Arrived : Wakatipu and Ocean Chief, from Wellington.—Onward, from Hokitika. Sailed : Josephine, for Wellington. PORT CHALMERS, Sunday, Arrived : Ringarooma, from Lyttelton.—Barque Bobycito, from Newcastle. BLENHEIM, Saturday., Arrived; Napier, a.s., at the wharf, at 3 p.m. She crossed the bar easily. Her arrival was regarded as a sensational event;'the Napier being the first locally-owned trading steamer that has come to Blenheim, and she was welcomed by numerous visitors. Th« p.s. Manawath, Captain Harvey, arrived here from Wanganuiat4.3o a.m. yesterday. She left there at 4.80 p.m. the previous day, and experienced fine weather down. The Manawatu will sail again for Wancanui this afternoon. The schooner Spray, Captain Euxton, arrived in harbor from Hokitika, timber laden, on Saturday. She left there ou the 27th ultimo, and experienced fresh S. E. and easterly winds throughout the trip. The s.s. Wakatipu sailed for Lyttelton and Port Chalmers on Saturday afternoon at 4 o'clock. The Wallace sailed for Nelson and West Coast ports at 2 p.m. same day. A telegram received from the Press Agency on Saturday stated that the p.s. Luna, bound from Greytn this port with a cargo of coal, had put into Westport in a leaky condition. She went on the Hard there and was repaired, and left again for this port on Saturday evening. It is supposed that she sustained the damage which caused the leak by grounding in the Grey River on Friday last. The s s. Tui left Foxton at 4.30 p.m. on Saturday; crossed the bar at 5 p.m.,and arrived in harbor at 2.30 a.m. vesterday. The schooner Rose of Eden from Picton, and the ketch Thames from Pelorus Sound, timber laden, arrived here, the former on Saturday, the latter yesterday. The ketch Falcon sailed for . Blenheim on Saturday evening in charge of Mr. Pope, late mate of the s.s, Napier. The Union Company's s.s. Hawea, Capt. Wheeler, arrived in port from tho South at 10 a.m. on Saturday. She sailed from Port Chalmers at 1 p.m. on the 2nd inst.; arrived in Lyttelton at 8.30 a.m. on the 3rd: sailed again at 5.30 p.m. same day, and arrived here as above stated. The Hawea left for the North at 1 o'clock yesterday. The s.s. Stormbird, Captain Doile, arrived in port frnni Napier at 2.45 p.m. on Saturday morning, having experienced head winds all the way. She left Napier at 11.30 Friday morning: rounded the Kidnappers at 1.30 p.m., with the windS.E., and Cape Turnagain at 9.30 p.m.; passed Castlepoint 1 a.m., and rounded Cape Palliser at 10.30 on Saturday, arriving as above. The Stormbird brings 57 casks tallow. 49 bales wool/ and 58 pockets wool, for transhipment into the Primera. consigned to Murray; Common, and Co. Captain Doile reports the s.s. Kiwi in the roadstead at Napier, where she has been sinew s'unday, 29th ultimo.-befogunable to" gefinside owing to the state of the bar. The Stormbird will sail for Foxton this afternoon.
The * s. St. Hilda arrived from the South yesterday evening, full up to the hatchways,with cargo, 50 tons of which U ior thi* port, and the remainder for Wanganui. Tho St. ICilda left Dunedin on the Ist inst.: ailed in at Titnaru, Oatnaru. and Lyttelton, and left the latter port at 4 p.m.. on Saturday last, and arrived in port at 8.30 p.m. yesterday. Had strong head wind with heavy head sea throughout. fapUin Wheeler, of the llawea, ! being in ill-health, ha* obtained a month's leave of absence, and will on his arrival at Nelson give up command of his boat to C-iDMir, A. Akaroa left Lyttelton late on Saturday for tlxls port, but up to the time of our going to press this morning she had not arrived. *The Akaroa comes here to convey Dr. Rous to Lyttelton, who has m f with a sad bereavement—the loss of his wife. Being run ashore, and ultimately examined, it' was fvmiid that at a distance of 15ft. from the stem of the vessel some 10ft. of her keel had been tom out in a peculiar manner, while the after part of the ship's Pot trim had also been seriously injured. Altogether the character of the damage done to the ship leads a Jp>.ird of Trade survvyor to the conclusion that the ship's hull had been struck by a volcanic eruption, a theory much strengthened by the well-known 'cha r;u ‘er of the locality.
