THE HUTT AGRICULTURAL AND PASTORAL SOCIETY.
At the first annual meeting of the above society, held at the Mechanics’ Institute, Lower Hntt, on Wednesday evening, Mr. Worth in the chair, the following report-was adopted:— “Your committee have much pleasure in making their first annual report of the society, for the year ending 31st July, 1877. “The year just closed has been a most eventful one in the history of this district, inaugurating as it has the formation of a society so necessary to the development of its agricultural: resources and improvement of stock. Your committee have great pleasure in congratulating the members on the success which has attended their first efforts. The committee being new to their work some slight mistakes have been made, but their efforts generally have been attended with success.
“ The show took place on the 7th of March, and the exhibits of horses, cattle, sheep, and pigs in the agricultural department were exceedingly g’ood; hut the poultry and miscellaneous articles were not up to the standard. In the horticultural department the vegetables and fruit were excellent; the entries of flowers and plants were not very numerous, but taking into consideration the late time of year, the exhibition, as a whole, may be looked upon as a very satisfactory result of the efforts of the society. “ The statement of accounts shows a very successful financial condition; the total receipts having been £343 9s. 7d., as against £196 Bs. 6d. in the way of expenditure, leaving a balance of £147 Is. Id. v> the society’s credit/ “ You will observe that the charges for medals and certificates have not been included in the accounts, as we are not in a position to make a statement as to their price ; but we believe, after paying all demands, a balance will remain to the society’s credit of about
£00; - The -medals 1 ; with cases, • have 1 •' been ordered from ,England,„and,, are -.expected ,by November. The certificates will be engrossed in [Wellington, and will -beßready inji fewweeks. ■ , . ■ ■ . “Your committee recommend that the next show of the society should take place In November, and they, have every, reason to' anticipate a very large exhibition. “In conclusion, your; committee would like, to thank the gentlemen .who have so liberally contributed to this society, without whoso support it would have been impossible to have brought it to its present successful condition. . We trust that they will continue their support to the society, which, commencing so auspiciously, may continue to improve, and be a benefit not only to. the district , but the country at large ; and we trust the example of his Excellency the Governor in his liberal donation, and the liberal promises of other prominent gentlemen in Wellington and other places, may be followed by all well-wishers of the association.” : ' The following officers were elected ;—Sir Wm. Fitzherbert, .president ; Messrs. George Hunter, J. Cruikshank, A. Ludlam, and Dr. Taylor, vice-presidents ; Mr. Pi A. Buckley, treasurer; Messrs. Thomas Mason and W. S.
