WELLINGTON DISTRICTS HIGHWAY BOARD.

A meeting of the above Board was held at the Hutt at noon yesterday. Present: Messrs. Mason (chairman), Smith, Taylor, Dick, Bayliss, and Speedy. The minutes of the last meeting were read and confirmed.

Mr. Taylor moved, Mr. Smith seconded, and it was carried, —That in the opinion of the Board Mr. Stilling has no further claim for salary, he having been originally appointed treasurer on June 8, 1873, at a salary of £SO a year, and having been re-appointed for three months only, on March 3, 1877, at an advance at the rate of £25 per annum. Having been paid in full for that time and up to 6th June, he has no further claim on the Board. Mr. Smith moved, Mr. Speedy seconded, and it was carried, —That the Engineer be instructed to lay off a line of road from the Pahautanui Small Farm road through section 94 to section 41, now occupied fey Mr. George Goldfinch. Accounts amounting to £269 10s. 4d. were passed for payment. The balance to the credit of the Board at the bank on July 31 was stated to be £733 Bs. 2d. An application for a road from Mr. Lett’s property at the Pakuratahi was referred to the engineer. It was agreed to call for tenders for the collection of the rates, and a slight discussion then ensued as to whether it was advisable to offer a certain percentage on absentees’ rates; but the subject was dropped without any decision being arrived at. The engineer was instructed to lay off a line of road fey Mr. Toomath’s property. Mr. Speedy called the attention of the Board to the fact that the Hutt Local Board were carrying away some shingle from Mr. White’s line. The Chairman thought there was no use crying over spilt milk. The Engineer remarked that there was plenty of shingle left to carry out any necessary repairs. The tender of Mr. Alexander Martin, at £SO, to keep in repair the Mungatoa road until March 31, 1878, was accepted. The Board then adjourned.
