Wk yesterday received the following letter from the assistant-clerk of the Legislative Council:—“ vVellington, 18th July, 1877. Sir, —I am directed by the Hon. the Speaker of the Legislative Council to inform you, that a seat will be provided for one of your reporting staff, in the Hansard reporter’s gallery of the Legislative Council Chamber, on the occasion of the opening of Parliament to-morrow. —I am, sir, yours very obediently, G. W. Jordan, clerk-assistant Legislative Council.— To the editor of the Nmv Zealand Times.” We hardly understand the meaning of this epistle. If it is meant that room will be provided in the Hansard gallery for a member of our staff over and above the ordinary accommodation afforded in the reporter’s gallery, to which our staff have hitherto gone as a matter of right, well and good; and we are obliged to Mr. Jordan, and “ the Hon. the Speaker,” for

their delicate attention ; but, if it is meant that there will only be room for one of our staff in the Hansard gallery, and that the reporter's gallery is to be devoted to other purposes, we have nothing to thank Mr. Jordan and “ the Hon. the Speaker ” for, and we shall decline to trouble ourselves about what is done in the Legislative Council. If that august body can do without us, we can do without them, and will leave the hon. the members of the Upper House unraported.
