Reid, and Proctors, Mr. Halz, Many of our readers will remember the once favorite passenger steamer Lord Ashley, which ran so long between this and the neighboring colonies as one of the Panama Company’s boats. She has. however, fallen from her high estate by being converted into a steam collier trading between Newcastle and Melbourne, The greater part of her passenger accommodation has been cleared out. extra hatches put in, and steam winches added to the other deck fittings. The cost of the alterations and additions was about £2OOO. The Ashley is now declared to be an admirable collier. Sir transit, etc — O. Z>. Times. Messrs. McMeckan, Blackwood, and Company s s.s. Tararna, Captain Sinclair, from Melbourne via Hoharton and South, arrived yesterday. She left the Williamaton lightship at 9,m. on July 6, and steamed slowly during the run to Hoharton, experiencing fine weather, and arriving there at 8 a.m. on July S: landed and embarked passengers, cargo. &c., and left at 4.30 p.m. on July 9: had south-west winds and fine weather across, arriving at the Bluff at 1.30 p.m. on July 13; sailed at 4.30 p.m., and reached Port Chalmers at 8 a m. on Saturday; left at 4.30 p.m., and arrived in Lyttelton at 11 am; on Sunday; sailed at 7.30 p.m. on Monday, and arrived in harbor at 12.15 p.m. yesterday. Had fine weather up the coast. The Tararna sailed for Melbourne via the West Coast at 9 o’clock last night. Tile London Times says A long distance match by sea has just been decided, which cannot fail to interest a great number of our readers in New Zealand. On the 10th of March last two iron clipper ships left Lyttelton Harbor, Canterbury, New Zealand, bound for London, the Crusader, Captain Davies, and the Rangitikei, Captain Scotland. Both vessels being about the same tonnage, and both having the reputation for fast sailing, heavy bets wore laid on their respective performances on the passage home. In fact, their start caused in the comparatively limited community of Canterbury almost ns much excitement as does tho Derby at Home. Each coasting steamer captain as he came into port forwarded to the local papers a report of the two ships' progress as far as they were sighted, namely at dusk 12th March off Banks’ Peninsula, up to which time they were well together, and betting was about even on them, each ship having its own enthusiastic partisans The race has terminated in one of the most remarkable runs ever made by a sailing vessel from tho Antipodes, the Crusader, Captain Davies, having reached the English Channel within 65 days of her leaving Lyttelton Harbor. This passage is an unprecedented one and worthy of record, being in fact little, if at all, in excess of what a steamer’s run would be over the same course. The Crusader is a fine-looking craft ol 1058 tons register, and is one of Messrs. Shaw, Savili and Co.’s pas, enger line of packets. Tire schooner Clio. Captain Chambers, came into port yesterday afternoon and anchored at 3 o’clock. She is on a voyage from Waitapu, Blind Bay, to Lyttelton, with a cargo of timber, and lias put in here owing to a painful accident having happened to one of her crew. Tile Clio left Waitapu at midnight on Saturday, with a moderate southerly breeze, and on arrival off Stephen Island at 3 o’clock on Sunday afternoon, the breeze freshening, the topgallant sail had to be taken in. One of the crew, named Christopher Smith, was up furling it, and as a confused sea was running at the time, the vessel pitched considerably. Just as he was about to pass th e gasket round the sail, tho vessel gave a violent plunge, and the shock carried away tho topsail tie, and tho yard dropped down, knocking Smith off, end he fell down on the deck. He was picked up almost insensible, and conveyed to tho cabin, whore every attention was bestowed on him possible under the circumstances. It was found that one of his thighs was very much swollen, and is feared to ho broken. His face was also considerably injured by coming in contact with some of tho gear as he fell down. Captain Chambers seeing that the poor fellow was in gicat agony, beat down tho Strait for this port, and arrived as above mentioned. Smith was taken ashore yesterday afternoon and conveyed to the Hospital. The Union Company’s s.s. Taranaki, with the English and American mails on board, arrived in harbor at 3 o'clock yesterday afternoon. She left the Manukau at 12 30 p.m. on Sunday last; arrived at

Taranaki at 3 a.m. on Mondaysailed at 8 a.m., and arrived in Nelson at 10.30 p.m.* left again at 1.30 p.m. yesterday, and reached Picton at 7 a.m.; sailed again at 10.15 a.m., and arrived in port as .above stated. Experienced fresh head winds throughout. Tho Taranaki sailed South at 7.15 last evening. The s.s. Wanaka sailed for Nelson at noon yesterday. She will return here via Picton, and is expected to leave Nelson to-day. The s.s. Kiwi sailed for Castlopoint and Napier at 5 o’clock yesterday afternoon. The s.s. Wakitipu will sail for Sydney direct to-day. The schooner Dunedin finished discharging her cargo of produce yesterday. This is the sixth cargo which she has landed hero in succession from Oamaru successively for the firm of Messrs. Hay and Barr. She has made goodaverage passages, and delivered all her cargoes in good condition, and without a stain. The s.s. Stormbird sailed for Wanganui at 10.45 a.m. yesterday. The s.s. Hawea left the Manukau yesterday, and as she comes direct herefrom New Plymouth she maybe expected to arrive here to-morrow.
