CARTERTON.
(from odb own correspondent.) The old topic of conversation and correspondence—the railway route —is once more beginning to excite the inhabitants of this district. I have it on good authority that the line is now being pegged off from Feathers ton by Woodside, making the deviation off the Rochfort line alluded to by Mr. Ormond when the deputation from Greytown waited upon him, through Carterton and Masterton; and should the line at present being cut be continued it will pass along the west side of the township a few chains from the main line of road.
C. J. Barker, Esq., manager of the late branch of the Bank of Australasia here, was entertained on Monday evening by his numerous friends at a dinner, as lie is about leaving for Canterbury. The dinner provided by host Hooker was, as usual, everything that could be wished, and after having been done ample justice to the usual toasts were passed and complimentary speeches made. The Bank of New Zealand purpose shortly enlarging their already convenient building, which has apparently proved too small for the business carried on.
It is generally believed that the timber trade of Carterton will some day be the principal source of income, and if such be the case that some day should not be far distant, as there are already four large saw mills in the district, and there are two more to be started shortly.
