The southerly wind which came-up hero on Wednesday afternoon blew hard during the night and yesterday. The indications yesterday showed that a falling barometer might be expected, and warnings to that effect were issued to extreme Southern ports. The Hawea from the .North, and- the Wellington from the South, should arrive here this morning. So as not to disturb the company’s time-table, the Wellington will return South, and the Hawea North, this day. The schooner Wild Wave came into port at noon yesterday from Lyttelton, after a Quick passage, having left there the previous afternoon. Experienced strong southerly winds up. ‘ The, Wild .Wave has a full cargo of produce. The steamer Hinemoa - steamed up to the head of the bay yesterday and came to an anchorage, where she will stay till the Government have decided..what to do with her. At present there is no work for her ; and the whole of the crew are under orders to quit. ' The ketch Edith Reid arrived in port yesterday morning from Catlin River, with < a full cargo of timber. The s.s. Tui’s departure for Kaikoura and Lyttelton haa been postponed till to-day, owing to the S.W. gale blowing. The s.s. Napier's departure for Foxton has also been postponed till to-day for the same reason. The schooner Ruby came into port yesterday afternoon. .She left here on Tuesday afternoon for Kaikoara, and when half-way across the Strait experienced light southerly winds, and beat down against them till arrival off Squally Point on Wednesday afternoon, when the full force of the southerly gale was experienced. Captain Dalton kept the ketch at it: but the sea increasing and running very heavy,, and the ketch laying down with her lee bulwarks under water by sheer atmospheric pressure, he had to pnt her helm up and run her before the gale for this port, arriving as above. Thejs.s Hawea, Captain Wheeler, arrived alongside the wharf at midnight last night. A ship from the southward was signalled yesterday afternoon at 5 o’clock, and at 7 o’clock she anchored a long way down the harbor. On our reporter going down to the ship shortly after she had anchored he was unable to gain admittance on board, as the health officers had not passed her. The ship, as far as we have learned, was not cleared last night, and therefore no information regarding her passage was obtainable.

The City of Madras has made the passage out in 89 days from Gravesend. She brings thirty-six Government immigrants for Foxton. and three saloon passengers, viz., Mr. and Mrs. Laughlan and Mr. J. A. Isaacs. The ship comes consigned to the New Zealand Shipping Company.
