[The following telegram was received at the New Zealand Times Office at twenty minutes to four o’clock this morning.]

Singapore, July 10, 12.30 p.m.

The news of the Russian defeat at Biela is not confirmed. According to the Russian despatches their forces occupied Biela on the sth of July. As to the war in Asia Minor a Turkish despatch states that Mukhtar Pasha has effected a restoration of communication with Kars.

Bombay, July 10,12.15 p.m.

Russian unofficial despatches assert that the Russian’s retreat in Armenia was caused by their having in the first instance quite underrated the strength o£ the Turkish forces, by which they were likely to be opposed, and as a result the Russian columns were quite inadequate to carry on the contemplated operations. In regard to the Russian invasion of Turkey in Europe, and the crossing of the Danube by the Tsar’s troops, it is believed that Abdul Kerim, the Turkish commander-in-chief, is occupying a defensive position.
