The Government steamer Stella, Captain Bendall, arrived in r>ort at 12.30 p.m. yesterday from the Chatham Islands, whither she went from Napier to procu-e Mr. Deighton, E.M., as evidence in the case of perjury against the second and third mates, and also an apprentice of the Ocean Mall. The Stella has done more work since herarrival in New Zealand than is generally credited to her." and as an instance we might mention the smart -work she has performed since she left this port on the 18th inst., despite very unfavorable weather. According to an account courteously supplied to us by Captain Bendall we find that at 9 p.m. on the 18th inst. she left the harbor for Portland Island, and experienced heavy southerly weather, arriving off .there' at 9-p.m; on the i»th.;_ lut. there was too heavy a. sea rnpning. to communicate with the shore, and consequently had to;seek an, an- - chorage at Wangawhia, off-Happy Jack's, 1 at 11-p.m'. Next day the weather had moderated; and at 2 p.m. ; weighed anchor andproceeded to Long Point, where the night was securely passed. Tlie'2lst inst. was ushered inwithalightbreeze fromtheN.W'., which enabled her to communicate with Portland Island, where about SO tons lighthouse material was landed, and at 3p.m was on her way for Napier, anchoring in the roadstead at 7.30 p.m. same day. On the 22nd orders were received to go to the Chatham Islands, and at 6 o'clock that afternoon she was on her way thither, Strong N.W. and S.S.E. weather was encountered, with thick weather, rain, and heavy sea on approaching the islands, At 4 a.m. on the 24th was close to the islands, and then the engines had to be slowed down, to await daylight to enable her to approach an anchorage. The morning broke with very thick weather, and at 7 a.m. she steamed towards the islands. An hour afterwards she passed the North West Keef, the sea breaking very heavily, and shortly afterwards Tlio Sisters were passed. Thence tho Stella shaped a course for Cuba Channel, which wa3 passed through safely by following the breaks. At noon the steamer v,a» anchored at Waitangi, where Mr. Deighton, R.M., came on board at 430 p.m. Half an hour afterwards the Stella was on Her way for Wellington, and rounded the West Eeef at 8 p.m. Strong S.S. VV. wind was encountered, with thick weather, till making Capo Palliser at 8 a.m. yesterday, arriving in port as above stated. The Stella made the trip from Napier to the Chatham Islands and back to this port, exclusive of stoppages, in something under three days, and as she hud to travel 700 miles to do that, it was not bad work at all, averaging 11 knots an hour. When the Stella arrived at the Chathams those on board were informed that nothing remained of the Ocean Mail but a portion of the bow. The Stella is expected to sail for The Brothers and Puysegur Point to-day with -tores and lighthouse material.
