Professor Pearson, who was defeated at the election, has been given an appointment in the Education Department equal to £IOOO a year. His duty is to reform and reorganise the department. One of the men injured in the collision near Duukeld baa died. At the inquest, John James, manager for the contractors, was committed for manslaughter, having given orders that led to the collision. ' ,
Lee, proprietor of the Police Xews, was com. mitted for trial for libel on a woman.
James Grainger, who was a candidate for Stawell at last election, was killed by falling down a shaft 300 ft.
Jervois and Scratchley are examining the harbor works. The latter will remain here to carry out the works. Business is very dull. Oats are in good demand at 3s. to 3a. 3d.; wheat, 7s. 7d.
