As Dr. Skae has discovered there is no truth in the charge made against the management of the Mount View Lunatic Asylum, of having grossly injured Gooder in the process of attempting to cure him, perhaps he will also inquire whether the man ought to have been discharged at all. We believe Gooder is even now quite out of his mind, and so violent that the neighbors have been compelled to apply to the police for protection. By a telegram received from a correspondent last night from Napier we learn that in the action Neal and Close v. Keith and Hunter a verdiot was returned for the defendants on all the issues.
At the Theatre Koyal last evennig the drama " Paul Pry" and a farce were performed. This evening will be produced " All that Glitters is not Gold," to be followed by " The Lottery Ticktt." There was only one " case " at the Resident Magistrate's Court yesterday, an inebriate being the offender, and he was fined ss. and costs, the usual alternative being allowed.
We have been requested to draw attention to the postponement of Messrs, Bethune and Hunter's land sale.
The town "Volunteer corps will parade next week at places and times stated in the district order.
Joseph Kiigonr, of Greymouth, moulder, has made application for a patent for au amalgamating brush for saving fine gold. The ordinary fortnightly meting of the City Council will be held this afternoon.
The Hon. Mr. Orrnond left for Napier yesterday morning. A conference of county chairman in Otago is to meet iu Dunedin en 2nd July. A Marton correspondent writes—The following judgment was delivered in the perjury' case on Saturday last ;—" This is a case in which Constable Arthur Warren is charged on the information of Samuel Gibbons with having committed wilful and corrupt perjury in the evidence he gave before the Court at Marton on the 11th inst. In the examination of the accused, the Court has very patiently heard the case for the prosecution, and considers the very contradictory evidence on most material points of the prosecutor and his witnesses confirms the constable's statement made before the Court on the 11th inst. We consider the prosecution to have completely broken down. You may leave the dock without (in oivr minds) a stain upon your character." (Applause, which was immediately suppressed.) The Resident Magistrate continued : " The contradictions between the evidence of Gibbons and his witnesses of this and the previous case, make the Court doubtful whether it should not direct proceedings for perjury against Gibbons." The following is the last weekly report of the mining manager for the Moanataiari Company :—-" The Directors. Gentlemen, —I have the honor to report as follows :—BO feet level, No. 9 reef : The drive east from bottom of new winze is extended 1-1 feet, and has intersected main slide, completely dislocating the reef. A rich deposit of gold made on the clay 4 feet long, but the roof of the drive is not looking so well. I think this is the shot of gold coming down from floor of 80-feet level. Driving from winze is now suspended, it being all in the slide. The winze is down 5 feet below this level. Soft country and clay are now making in bottom, but none of the reef has been broken since sinking was resumed. In the 80-feet level west on the same reef I am cutting a winze chamber 61 feet west from the cross-cut, for sinking No. 2 winze, to communicate with 150-fect level, keeping to the seaward side of the slide until reaching new level. While doing this work, driving west has been suspended for a few days, and no reef has been broken iu the drive since last reported. In the drive east from cross-cut 55 feet has been driven into main slide from point of intersection. The country in face is now much broken, but free from water. I estimate that a further distauce of 20 or 30 feet will reach through the slide. The stopes in back of level are good payable stuff, and the stopes eastward are now lengthening out as worked over the slide. Driving east on Heldt's reef has also been suspended through strikiug the slide. Wallace's and the crossleader occasionally show gold freely, otherwise there is no change. N.W. Cross-cut : The winze being sunk upon All Nations leader is down 59 feet below the 80 feet level, and is going through payable stuff 1J feet thick. There is no change in tho stopes on Nos. 1 and 3 reefs. Good progress is being made in cutting the chamber for the 150-feet level—guides, ladders, and two sets of timber having been fixed. All this work will be completed during the coming week, and the cross-cut started without delay. During the past fortnight 450 tons of quartz have been crushed, also 17cwt. of specimens, and the total result is 32000z5. of retorted gold. The mine throughout is now looking very well. In conclusion I may say that the well-known slide striking through the company's ground is considerably shortening the length of reefs on the seaward side ; hut I believe that by extending cross-cuts the reefs will be again picked up on the eastward side of the slide. The machinery is all in good working order."
