RESIGNATION OF SERGEANT MONAGHAN.

We regret to state that Sergeant Monaghan, as we still would be pleased to call him, has decided to sever his connection with the ponce of Wellington, iu which force he has distinguished himself as a zealous officer and a good man; the which characters are not, by the way, in the least incompatible ; albeit they might, and possibly are, esteemed so by the ignorant. It is not often that we find an official, departing from active public service, who has so much of goodwill felt for him as we feel convinced has the subject of this short article. Further, wo may say, with confidence, that few men have the satisfaction of understanding, as Mr. Mouaghan can, that on leaving office he carries with him the esteem, friendship, and heartv goodwill of all those with f . whom, in an official capacity, he has been whom he has had control. Iu this connection we are pleased to notice that any opinion of Mr. Monughan that we may have expressed, has been fully confirmed by the spontaneous action of his comrades in the Wellington district, who among themselves have subscribed a considerable amount of money, for the purchase of a testimonial in the shape of a valuable gold watch and chain, which will be presented to-dav at one o'clock. This is an act at once

graceful and affectionate, betokening esteem for the man as an officer, and sincere regard for him as a friend; and we he rtily congratulate Mr. Monaghan for the golden opinions ho has honestly gained from all sorts of people.
