The Westland County Council recently asked the Government if they were disposed to hand over to it the Mikonui and other water-races included within that county, and if so, upon what conditions. We understand that the Government have replied that they are prepared to hand over the Wnimea and Mikonui water-races, being the whole of those in the hands of the Government that are in progress within the county, on condition that the Council undertake all future liability in respect to water-races in Westland. It seems that the expenditure on the Waimea race, out of tire Parliamentary vote for the year, amounted on 30th April to £IB,OOO, and the works authorised in connection therewith and now being executed will amount to about £22,000 more, leaving a balance of say £12,0u0 for works still to be undertaken. The Government propose to continue the charge of the works authorised, and to place this balance of £12,000 at the disposal of the county, for the Council to carry on such water-races - in Westland as the Council may recommend and the Govern, ment approve. Out of the appropriation for the Mikonui race there is an unexpended balance of £15,000. This balance will also be placed at the disposal of the county, to be expended solely on that race, and the cost of any further works that may be required in connection therewith will have to be provided by the county.
