The i "arnatic. from Lyttelton, for London via Wellington, anchored in the fairway last evening, having made the passage from Lyttelton in 20 hours. On the last occasion of this vessel visiting Wellington she was a ship, but has since been turned into a barque. She was delayed at Lyttelton, owing to the jjrevalence of easterly wind, for live days. The Carnatic has a quantity of cargo on board shipped at Lyttelton for London, and will finish loading here for that port. There is already a considerable quantity of cargo now here awaiting shipment in her, and it is expected that she will receive quick despatch. The Rally TeUymph states that during the voyage of the Swedish barque Erato, from Gothernburg to Melbourne, Captain Hanson reports that he fell in with what he confidently believes was a derelict vessel in a sinking condition in latitude Ildeg, 46roin. S. and longitude 32deg. 27min. W. The vessel was a large black painted barque, and had evidently been in collision, the bowsprit and foretoprnast having been carried away. The sails were hanging to the yards, the maintopsail being sheeted home, and In so far as could be ascertained there was no one on board. There was a ship which was much nearer to the disabled vessel than, the Erato, and Captain Hanson is ■under the impression that the crew of the barque had been taken on board this ship. The name or nationality of the barque could not be ascertained. The s.s. Napier arrived from Foxton at 3 a.m. yesterday. She will sail again for the same place this afternoon. The brigantine Omaha, with the crew of the Ocean Mail, arrived from the Chatham Islands yesterday morning at 9 o’clock. The Omaha went from Auckland to the Chathams, and left the former place on the 4th April with a large general cargo and twelve passengers. Was nearly a fortnight going down, owing to a succession of southerly winds, and on the 16th April the islands were reached ; discharged cargo all round the islands at the different stations, and on the 19th inst. left for Wellington : experienced light northerly winds up to midnight on Monday; thence strong S.S.E. till arrival. The Omaha is under Government contract to supply a mail at stated intervals to the Chatham Islands, and has been employed in the trade for some time, the vessel being very well suited to it. She is an Auckland built craft, two years old, and looks a good comfortable boat. She is stated to be an excellent sailer and sea boat, and is of superior build.
