(PER PRESS AGENCY.) Christchurch, Saturday. In the Resident Magistrate's Court this morning, Robertson, a half-caste, was charged with abduction. The girl in her evidence said she left home of her own accord, and that the prisoner knew nothing of it till she met him at Oamaru accidentally. He advised her to return home, but she refused, as her father wanted her to marry a white man. She and prisoner had not lived as man and wife. The prisoner said he was willing to marry the girl if her father consented. The Bench said there was no case, and ordered the girl to be sent
home. The accused was remanded to Dunedin. A man named Mitchell, a breaksmau at Waimate station, fell off a truck, and several trucks went over his legs, crashing them badly. Subsequently he had one foot and part of the other amputated. Wanganui, Saturday. It is intended to hold an Art and Industrial Exhibition at Wanganui in August. Exhibits will be received from all parts of the colony. The programme is to embrace all varieties of colonial industry and objects of art and scientific collections. Bishop Redwood dedicates the new Catholic Church to St. Mary to-morrow. Dunedin, Saturday. The inquest on the girl Mclntyre has been adjourned till Tuesday. Dr. Batcheldor’s evidence was that the immediate cause of death was congestion of the lungs, caused by exposure in a cold room while suffering from inflammation of the lungs, and in a state of starvation. Poet Chalmers, Saturday. A volunteer banquet, at which fully 200 were present, was held last night. The war aspect formed the principal topic of interest, the several speakers urging the necessity of the Government taking immediate steps for the protection of the colony. It was suggested that batteries be erected at the Saudspit, Sawyer’s Bay, and Eorbury Heads. The formation of a Eenoible Corps has been spoken of.
