Meehourne, May 4, Judge Stewart has received twelve mouths leave of absence. Mark Lyons, charged with stealing diamonds, has been arrested in England. The report of the National Bank shows that it declared a dividend at the rate of 12J per cent. A baker named McCudbin fell downstairs and was killed. The Melbourne Ice Company have declared a dividend of 10 per cent. An anti-patronage society has been formed for the purpose of securing the appointments to Civil Service by competiti is examinations. Mr. J. G. Francis has been appointed president. . The Harbor Trust Commission have resolved to send Home for a first-class engineer to report upon the harbor works. The turret ship Cerberus has been fully manned, and when fitted with more efficient steering apparatus will be ready for immediate action. Large sales of wheat have been male at 7s. 3d. to 7s. 4d.; flour sold at £ls 10s. to £ls 15s. Eive men belonging to the Admiralty surveying steamer Victoria were drowned in Banks Strait by the capsizing of a boat in a squall. Adelaide, May 4. A cargo of wheat and grain has arrived from New Zealand. Two others are to follow. During the passage of the ship Alnamic Castle the crew mutinied and stabbed the master. Great feeling has been manifested by the working classes against free immigration. Tasmania, May 4. ' The Treasurer’s Financial Statement shows the revenue last year to be £313,905; but the increased expenditure left a probable deficiency of £19,124. The expenditure of this year Is estimated at £318,405, to which had to be added interest of main line of railway, which, together with interest on outlay on public works, made a total of £395,000. The scheme of public works embraces an outlay of £400,000, extending to every district. An income tax of 2J per cent, is proposed, exempting incomes under £2OO,
