KARORI-MAKARA HIGHWAY BOARD.
A meeting of the Karori-Makara Highway Board was held on Saturday last, at which there were present—Mr. 0. 0. Graham (Chairman), and Messrs. Cooke, Bowler, Page, and Wright. The minutes of the previous meeting having been read and confirmed, The bank account to tho credit of the Board was stated to bo £370 Tls. Id. A letter was received from the Colonial Secretary, asking for suggestions as to future legislation in the direction of a general road board law. Tho consideration of the creation was postponed till the next meeting of tho Board.
A petition was received from Mr. Alfred Reading, asking for a subsidy in aid of making a road to ins property at Park Vale. It was resolved that Mr. Heading he asked to attend the next meeting of tho Board to afford information, and that Mr. Page he requested to inspect the road in the meantime. An account from the contractor for repairs to culverts of £2 was passed. A letter from Mr. Wright, as warden for No. 5 ward, asking that Ohiro-rpad be completed, at an estimated cost of £OO or £/0, to be done by day work, was received, and rvns agreed to, Mr, Wright consenting to act as overseer of the work.
A letter from the City Council, agreeing to contribute £2G towards the maintenance of the Evans Bay road, was ordered to be acknowledged with thanks. A letter was received from Mr. J. C. Crawford, protesting against the small grant-in-aid of the road to the new township of Brighton. The letter was ordered to bo acknowledged by informing Mr. Crawford that tho Board could not at present increase the amount. The agreement to accept the annual valuation of the Patent Slip Company at £l5O, was confirmed.
A letter from the Hutt County Council relative to the levying by the Board of a Is. in the £ rato, Was considered, and unanimously agreed to, on the understanding that the Government subsidy was to be equally divided between the county and the road hoard. Tim Chairman stated that he had consented to cei'taiu extras for the culvert'at the Botanical Garden gate, rendered necessary by the decay of the old one.—Confirmed. In reference to the extension of the North Makara-road, the Chairman and Mr. Cook were authorised to meet Mr. Monk on the ground, and agree to some mutual arrangement as to gates and fences, and call for tenders. With regard to the South Kavori-road, it was agreed that it should be widened by day labor, the amount not exceeding. £SO, Mr. Page supervising the same. It was agreed that the road to Mr. Williams’, at the junction, be repaired at an estimate not. exceeding £l2. The following accounts were passed; Hooper, contract, £8 ; Goodman, contract, £2O; advertising, stationery, &c., £l3 ; Ohiroroad, per Mr. Wright, £26 125.; MeManaway, culvert, £8 4s. fid.; Shotter and I 'Co., £5 Bs. Total, £Bl 4s. fid. The Clerk was instructed to call the attention of Mr. Tarr to the danger caused by his pigs sending down stones from the precipices adjoining the road, with an intimation that unless the nuisance was abated legal steps would be taken. The Chairman was authorised' to have the windows of the Board-room glazed, and the place put in proper order. This concluded the business.
