At the time there was a heavy gale, with a terrific sea, and as the vessel was going at the rate of 10 knots it was impossible to attempt any effort to save him. Sailed-: Rotorua. The following vessels left the bay yesterday : 'Cynthia and Rose of Eden, for Pelorus Sound ; Fiery Cross, for Auckland: Reward, for Picton; J. G. The brigantine Hannah Broomfield, for . Kaipara. and ketch Forest Queen, for Waitara, had made a start at dusk, but would probably bring ap again, as the wind died away shortly <af terwarda. • The Government steamer Stella left for the Manukau at 5 o'clock yesterday afternoon for the Hon. Mr. "WLHaker. - On her way back to this port she will ■call at Taranaki for the Hon. Major Atkinson. The Lyttelton will sail again for Blenheim to-day. The Press says:—Whilst the retirement of Captain Mclnnis -from the command of the Opawa through ill-health is to be regretted, it is satisfactory to see that the office thus made vacant has been filled by an officer of the company whose past services fully entitle him to the position. Captain McKelvie went Home as chief officer of the Waipa last year, and through .the Illness of his commander really had charge-of -the ship, and proved himself quite equal to the occasion. Both In the Waipa and other vessels trading to this -port, Captain McKelvie gained the respect ot his shipmates, and has well merited promotion. The s.s. Arawata, Captain Underwood, left Wellington at 12.30 a.m. on the 3rd ; arrived at Nelson at 10.30a.m.: sailed -again at 1 p.m.; cleared the French Passat 3.28 p.m.; and arrived alongside the Queen's wharf last night. The Arawata will leave here for ijelboume via the South.taking the outward Suez mail, this afternoon. The recent homeward voyage of the St. Osyth is thus noticed by a correspondent of the Engineer:— ■"The St. Osyth reached London on January 30, after Ijer fifth and most successful run to Melbourne and Sydney and back, the total time occupied being only four months and five days between the time of her departure from Plymouth and her arrival back in the Downs. The outward rim was accomplished in some hones within' 45 days. Throughout the whole voyage the engines were only stopped for three hours, owing to three boiler tubes giving out, which had been damaged when they were cleaned before leaving Plymouth. The homeward run from Melbourne to the Downs occupied 61 days. Including time for coaling at Cape Verd ; steaming time, under 49 days. ' This,' enr correspondent adds,' I need hardly say is splendid work.' What is most remarkable Is the fact that the engines no bom Melbourne to Cape Verd without any stoppage whatever, and had it not been for the necessity* of coaling and sweeping uptake, might have ran Home. ' The run to Cape Verd recorded over 40 days' uninterrupted steaming. Her consumption has been .32} tons iper 24 hours on the outward passage, rod 34 £ons.Australian Bulli coal Home.
