Any difference is error, plus or minus, of the chronometer. - The Uilion Company's steamship Taranaki, Captain • Griffiths, arrived in port yesterday at 10.16 a.m; from the South. She left Port Chalmers at 5 p.m. on the 28th inst.; touched at Akaroa, and made Lyttelton at 3 p.m. on the 29th; sailed again at 7 p.m. on the 30th, and arrived here as above stated. Had strong southerly wind up from Lyttelton. The Taranaki will sail North at 8 o'clock this morning. t The schooner Merlin, which arrived in port on Monday afternoon, is on a voyage from Oamaru to Waitara. - She experienced the heavy S.E. gale on the coast, and received a rou a b.handling. She put in to iepair damages. ■ -. . r . ; "V The steamer Kangatira sailed for Napier and Poverty Bay at 5.30 p.m. yesterday. She was full of cargo, some of which had to be stowed on. deck. When the cutter Dido was on a trip from N elson to - Blenheim a short time ago, the main-boom carried away Captain Shilling at the time put his head Up from the cabin to see what had occurred, when he re-; ceived a very severe blow in the mouth from a wire rope which was flying about, which knocked out five of his teeth and severely cut the flesh. Captain Momson brought the vessel over here from Blenheim. The Union Company’s s.s. Wellington, Captain Lloyd, from Northern ports, arrived here yesterday at 11 a.m. She left the Manukau at 6 p.m. on the 28th; had a- strong westerly gate, which raised a very high - sea, and on her arrival off New Plymouth next morning it was found impossible to land any cargo, great difficulty being experienced in getting the passengers ashore, owing to the heavy surf ; proceeded on to Nelson same morning, but the wind had changed round to the S.E., and blew a whole gale, with high sea ; reached Nelson that night; sailed again at 10.30 a.m. on the 30th; arrived at Picton at 6 p.m.; sailed again at 4 a.m. yesterday, and arrived here as above. She proceeded South at 5.30 p.m. yesterday. The ship Plelone was towed round to the Patent Slip yesterday afternoon, to have her bottom cleaned and painted. Afterwards she will sail for Calcutta. The steamer Taupo, from the South, is expected to arrive here to-morrow morning. Tho steamer Stormbird will leave for Wanganui today.
THE KAKAIA. All the good ship Kakaia now needs to make a start for London is a puff of fair wind.
