HUTT COUNTY COUNCIL.
The ordinary monthly meeting of the Hatt County Council was held yesterday afternoon. There were present—Messrs. Mason, (chairman), Taylor, Chew, Lancaster, Monaghan, Smith, Morgan, Speedy, and Dick. The minutes of last meeting were read and confirmed.
A question of providing relief for a poor man and woman resident at the Hutt, .was postponed till the Chairman had inquired into the question of charitable aid. The CHAIRMAN remarked, with regard to’ the endowment of a portion of the .Reclaimed Land, that he had waited upon the Hon. Mr. Ormond, who had premised to see the Minister of Crown Lands, with whom the matter rested, on the subject, and see what could be done.
After the transaction of some other unimportant business, the Council went into committee to consider the financial position of the county. On resuming, Councillor Taylor proposed, and Councillor Lancaster seconded, —That the Chairman be instructed to communicate with the road boards and local" boards of this county, with a view to find out whether they will agree to levy a rate of Is. in the £ for the year ending 31st March, 1878. —Carried. Councillor Lancaster moved, and Councillor Dick seconded, —That the services of ’ the engineer be placed at the disposal of the road and local boards. —Carried.. ' ' 1 Councillor Smith moved, —That all ’ the rates be expended in each riding where they are collected, with its proportion of ’ the subsidy after deducting working expenses.; Councillor Speedy seconded. After some little discussion, the motion waa carried. »■ ’
The report of the committee appointed to consider on what basis travelling . expenses should be allowed to members of Council was read as follows ; , : - P
“ The committee report that they have.carefully considered the question of travelling expenses to be allowed to members of the Council; and have unanimously decided to recommend that members who do not have to travel more than twenty miles to the Council meetings shall be allowed £1 la., and those members who travel over twenty miles to the Council meetings shall be allowed £1 10s. for attendance at each ordinary or special meeting of the Council; allowance to be computed from the first meeting of the Council, but ho allowance to be made for attending committee meetings.” Councillor Taylor proposed, Councillor Speedy seconded, " and * it was -carried,—That the question of removing certain buildings on the roadside at the Pakuratahi, be referred to the engineer to report on. The consideration of the motion as to the removal .of the Hutt tollgate was postponed.
Accounts to the extent of £370 for the month were passed.
In reference to other matters some business was transacted, and notices of motion were given for next meeting, after which the Council adjourned. . ,
