- The steamer Wanaka proceeded to Lyttelton and Tort Chalmers at 8.30 p.m. yesterday. The schooner which was reported in yesterday’s issue as having run into port and anchored at Halswell Point, is the Jane Anderson, Captain Saunders. She .is on a voyage from Kaipara to Dunedin,-and commenced her trip on the 22nd ult. Worked down the coast against a strong S.E. wind, with very heavy sea ; got a breeze from the N.W., which took her clear of the'Strait, hut when off Kaikoura the weather Increased in severity • and blew a gale from the S.E.; with a tremendous high sea. The vessel was put to it; but all the headstays were carried away, and Captain Saunders was obliged to turn round and scud up before a heavy gale and sea for this port, where, she anchored at 3.30 p.m. on Sunday. She will get repaired here, and proceed on her voyage to Dunedin with the first fair wind.

' The'p.s. Manawatu sailed for Wanganui evening shortly after 6 o'clock. The s.s. Arawata is expected to arrive here from Melbourne via the South to-morrow morning. The steamer Taranaki, from the South, will arrive in port this morning. She will go North to-morrow .morning at 8 o’clock. "The s.s.-Wellington will proceed South at 3 o’clock this afternoon. The steamer Kiwi has been fitted with one of Saun-dcre*-patent cable controllers for riding. This very useful invention came but from- London in the Pleione, and will tend greatly to lessen the chance , of the Kiwi losing her cables and anchors, which has frequently been the case when riding in the heavy swell off the East Coast. : The ketch Falcon, which arrived in port last evening, left Blenheim on Tuesday last but getting barbound In the Wairau, was unable to get out into the Strait till Sunday, Then she met with a strong S.E. gale, and had to go back. ’ Finally she made another start yesterday morning, and arrived as above stated, after a very dirty passage. She returns on Wednesday afternoon. "The cutter Dido left Blenheim' same time as the Falcon, and experienced similar weather. The s.s. Tui left for Kalkoura and Lyttelton at 6.30 p.m. yesterday,>but on.getting- to the Heads Che strong southerly wind and sea were too, much for her, and she had torcturn to port again. - ■*
