STREET OBSTRUCTIONS.
The following letter, in reference to street obstructions, received by Mr. LeCren from the Mayor, has been handed to the editor forpublication:— “ The Mayor’s Office, “ Wellington, April 28, 1877. “Sir, —-I have the honor to acknowledge: the receipt of your letter of the 27th inst.,. after its publication in the New . Zealand Times. As you have adopted an unusual course in thus giving it publication, I presume it is not your wish that ,1 should, bring thematters to which it refers officially before theCouncil. I may however, mention for your information, that the police have ample power to carry out the by-laws of the City Council—l hardly know for what other purpose they are employed—although for some reason or another,, which I do not profess to understand, they appear to have orders not to do so. The Inspector of Nuisances has instructions to pres vent, as far as he possibly can, any material connected with buddings from being left in an unguarded condition on the streets. “ I regret exceedingly that you should have suffered from any obstruction in the pathway, and you may depend upon me using any limited power the Council possesses in keeping the streets as clear as is consistent with the necessary accommodation to builders and others carrying on improvements ithe city.— I have, &e., “ William Hutchison, “Mr. Wm. LeCren, Wellington.”
