WAIRARAPA RAILWAY.
TO THE EDITOR OP THE NEW ZEALAND TIMES. Sib, —In your columns I notice a letter from a Carterton correspondent signing himself “ Scribendum,” which might safely be allowed to take its place in the waste-paper basket, together with many mere brilliant effusion of the some intelligent writer. If every one interested in the direction the proposed railway line takes through the Wararapa Valley knew as • well the motives - which prompted the writer of the letter ref erred'to as the people of the Wairarapa do, commentwouid be needless, but as some of the people of Wellington may think that there is some truth in the statement made by this brilliant writer, I send you the following:—He commences thus: “ Sir,—l should like to bring a few facts before the public, concerning Greytown and the much talked of railway route.” If the writer of this letter had to answer for these so-called facta before a judge, he might consider a little before stating them. But perhaps he did not know the meaning of the word fact, and intended it to mean something totally different to what it really does. In that case he deserves sympathy instead of censure. I am inclined to this view of the question, as it could not possibly be conceived that any person well informed or having a proper cerebral development could make such statements. But it would bo idle to contradict in detail such vague effusions as those of the writer of the letter referred to. Suffice it to say that were Greytown outof existence altogether, it would be the interests of the Wairarapa as a whole to- have the line of railway through the centre of the valley, in spite of the so-called engineering difficulties. If a private company had a large block of land.
they wished to open up, would they make arailway along one side of it, leaving the other side as much out of its reach as if there was none at all ? I should think not. Why should not the same motives actuate the Government as would a private company ? Apologising for trespassing on your space.—l am, &c., ________ Truth.
