On Monday night the Timaru Jockey Club refused to endorse the action of the Oamaru Jockey Club in disqualifying Fishhook and Derritt, his rider, the meeting being packed by the sympathisers of the alleged tricksters.

Another meeting of the Club was accordingly held last night, when a resolution was carried rescinding the previous decision, and endorsing the disqualification of both Fishhook and his rider Derritt by the Oamaru Jockey Club. The magisterial work at Christchurch has become so heavy that Whiteford, Resident Magistrate at Kaiapoi, has been appointed Assistant Resident Magistrate. At a meeting of shareholders of the Permanent Investment Association, it transpired that the defalcations of Herdson, late chief clerk, amounted to nearly £6OOO, instead of £6OO, as previously stated. The defalcations extended over a period of five years, during part of which the Association held a guarantee policy for £IOOO in the Australian Alliance Company, but as the claim under it had not been made as required within three months of the expiration of the policy, the company refused to pay. This was unfavorably commented on at the meeting. The question of sending a detective to arrest Herdson, who is living near San Francisco, was left to the decision of the directors.

The Rev. Mr. Carlyon, incumbent of the Kaiapoi Episcopalian Church, is still in hot water respecting his ritualistic practices. At the last meeting of the vestry the following resolutions were proposed:—“That the Churchwardens apply to the Bishop for a faculty to remove from the church at Kaiapoi the following articles (the use of which has been declared by the highest Ecclesiastical Courts in England to be illegal), viz., all candles and candlesticks not necessary for the efficient lighting of the church, vases, tablecovers . (except such as are provided by vestry), crosses, retable or supra, altar candles, etc., aud that the Bishop be requested to inhibit the continuance of all processions with or without crosses, colored stoles, banners, bowing to the communion table, and the employment of one or more acolytes within the communion rails, which, in the opinion of this vestry, are not only illegal bnt highly repugnant to a very large marjority of the parishioners.” “That in the opinion of this vestry, the sermon delivered by the incumbent in defence of the Rev. Mr. Tooth, now under punishment for contempt of the laws of England, was not only uncalled for, but disloyal, and that the churchwardens report it to the Bishop.” The Rev. Mr. Carlyon refused to put both motions, aud the meeting soon after terminated. Other steps will probably be taken in the matter. Ashburton, Wednesday.
