During a debate in the House of Commons Lord Derby intimated that the Government had no hope of averting war. England was not desirous of interfering, but the Government reserved the right to protect English interests.

The discount market is dull. The Bank reserve has improved. Stocks partially recovered. Colonial securities are weaker. Advance on wheat maintained. The tallow market is active ; Australian advanced eighteenpence per cwt. Arrived—Auckland, from Otago. Sydney, Monday.

Hanks and Co.'s large grocery establishment was destroyed by fire to-day. Adjoining premises also damaged.
