WANTED A SCHOOLMASTER.

TO THE EDITOR OF THE NEW ZEALAND TIMES.

Sin, —My attention was attracted by an advertisement which appeared the other day in your paper, calling for applications for an appointment as schoolmaster, under the Patea Education Board, at a salary of £l5O per annum. As my usual work on the wharf (at Is. fid. per hour) is likely to be rather slack for some time to come, I at once determined to make an application, the only condition I intended to insist on was that my travelling expenses should bo paid. Anticipating no objection to the aforesaid stipulation, I considered myself as certain of the position as if already installed. But, on examining the advertisement more intently, I discovered that applicants must be able to produce certificates “at least equal to a second-class Wellington certificate.” Now, sir, as this involves a thorough knowledge of school management, and the art of teaching, and an intimate acquaintance with the subjects taught in our schools, such as history, English grammar, the three It’s &c., &c., together with a moderate knowledge of Latin and mathematics, I, of course, abandoned the idea. It struck mo, apart from the qualifications required, that the salary was rather low to suit me, and I could not help remarking that we working people are better paid than country schoolmasters, when all things are considered. But I have no doubt the Patea Board will succeed in getting a man worth their money. —I am, &c., Ignoramus.
