A protracted meeting of the Manawatu County Council was held last night. The Council selected William Osborn, as clerk at a salary of £l5O per annum, and voted the chairman the same amount for his term of office. It was decided to take over the road in and out of Otaki as a county road. They adopted a resolution by five to two that in the opinion of this Council the funds, as far as they would allow, were fairly apportioned to the rightful needs of each riding, and that in particular the riding of Manchester had its full share. It was resolved by five votes to two that in the opinion of this Council the business of the Council can be more efficiently
and cheaply conducted by maintaining the unity of the county than it could be if the county was divided ; that this Council considers the attempt to divide the county impolitic and unnecessary, and that it would if sanctioned bring the Counties Act into contempt, as an undue proportion of the revenue would then be paid away in salaries. IN emulations for Birthday Handicap and Auckland Handicap close to-morrow and Handicap Steeplechase for Autumn meeting on the twentieth. ° The jury on the Parnell poisoning case returned an open verdict. There is great dissatisfaction with the result, as witnesses deposed that the husband had treated his wife cruelly, calling her opprobrious names. _ The City Council has carried a motion to give the Bank of Hew Zealand twelve mouths notice of intention to terminate the present agreement, so as to enable the Council to remove the account if deemed advisable. Alexandra, Thursday. The Waikatos, numbering upwards of 100, arrived at Kopua this morning. None of the principal Kingites .are there, Tawhiao not having arrived from Kawhia. They will have a meeting at Kopua, and then at once occupy the land appointed for them. Revs. Williams, Baron, and Tarewhstu with families, are amongst them. Timaku, Thursday. Dugald Bluet, a substantial farmer at the Levels, was committed for trial yesterday on a charge of stealing sheep from the Canterbury and Otago Association. Gseyjioiith, Thursday. The Energetic Quartz Mining Company has declared a dividend (twelfth) of three shillings per share. Dunedin, Thursday. A stable containing twenty stalls, the property of John Fraser, Market Reserve, was burned down last night. All the horses were gotout safely, but the forage and harness, value £l5O, were destroyed. No insurance. The origin of the fire is unknown. Ihe escort arrived to-day, bringing down 04370Z5. of gold. McLaren and a lot of loafers, encouraged by paragraphs in the Guardian and Nevis, held a meeting this afternoon, and intend presenting a petition to the Governor asking for employment. BALCLHTHA JOCKEY CLUB ANNUAL RACES. Balcluiiia, Thursday. The weather was magnificent, but the attendance only about 200. The course was in good order. Maiden Plate of 15 sovs. One mile and a half. Telemaohus, 1 ; Joker, 2 ; Freedom, 3 ; Raven, 4 ; and McKenna's nowhere. Telexnachus took the lead at the grand stand, and never was caught. Shaw held all the way. Clutha Handicap of 35 sovs. One mile and a half. Spinaway, 1 ; Atlas, 2 ; Bothwell, 3 ; Stanley, 4 ; Welcome, 5. Bothwell took the lead at the start, but after passing the Grand Stand Soiuaway went to the front and kept it to the finish, Atlas being two lengths behind. Selling Race of 15 sovs. One mile and a quarter. Clyde, 1 ; St. Andrew, 2. Rufus, Roebuck, Freedom, and Atlas had a false start. St. Andrew got off with the lead. The race was neck-and-neck between Clyde and St. Andrew throughout, St. Andrew made an effort at the finish, and another jump would have given him the stakes.
Plying Handicap of 15 sovs. One mile. Spinaway, 1 ; Telemachus, 2; Oolva Seargeant, 3. This was a very good race. The whole racingpassedoff satisfactorily, and good sport is expected to-morrow.
