THE HUTT PARK RESERVE.
A public meeting was advertised to be held yesterday at noon, at the Masonic Hall, Lower Hutt, in accordance with the provisions of the Hutt Public Park and Racecourse Act, 1866. The Masonic Hall being now used as a schoolhousc, themeetingwas held at Valentine’s Hotel, which is close to the “ hall,” but the “public” did not attend, the following trustees, with a reporter, comprising the whole meeting: —Messrs. Hickson (chairman), R, S. Crawford, J. Grace, Wilkin, Cudby, and Dr. Wilford.
The Chairman reed the advertisement convening the meeting, and said its object was to pass accounts, and transact any other business that might be brought forward. He regretted to see that the public apparently took such a small interest in the matter; but if they did not care to attend it was no fault of the trustees, and ho would therefore now proceed to business by laying the annual balance-sheet before the meeting. The balance-sheet showed a balance in hand of £27 Bs. lOd.
Mr. Grace moved that the accounts be passed. This was seconded, put, and carried unanimously, and the balance-sheet adopted. Dr. Wilford said ho would propose that the Chairman and Messrs. Crawford and Hickson be appointed a committee to negotiate with Mr. Mason to purchase the ten acres of land required to complete the racecourse. If, however, tho land could not bo bought, it was
desirable to obtain as long a lease of it as possible. The Chairman said he doubted whether Mr. Mason had power to do more than to lease the laud, but probably he might obtain a further power of attorney, which would authorise him to sell. The present lease of the racecourse expired in September, and he believed the trustees would let it for at least £IOO a year. Mx - . J. Wilkin seconded the motion of Dr. Wilford, which was carried unanimously.
Dr. Wilford suggested that the Chairman should bring under the notice of the County Council, Local or Highway Board, or whoever was the proper authority to apply to (of which there appeared some doubt), the bad state of the road leading to the racecourse. He moved that the Chairman communicate with the Chairman of the County Council on the subject. He believed the Jockey Club would bo willing to contribute towards putting this road in an efficient state of repair. Mr. Crawford said ho had great pleasure in seconding Dr. Wilford’s motion. The road was really in a dangerous condition in some parts, and there was great likelihood of accidents occurring. The motion was put and named.
The Chairman said the road was certainly in a very bad state, and so far as the power of the trustees went he was afraid the Act did not give them the authority to expend their funds in making or improving the road. He would write to the Chairman of the County Council, the Hoad Board, and the Jockey Club on the subject. This concluded the business, and the meeting then separated.
