LATE AUSTRALIAN NEWS.

Melbourne, April 9. The German corvette Hertha, homewardbound, was spoken by the Portuguese ship Alva on Thursday last. A new automatic buoy, an American invention for the prevention of shipwreck, was fixed in the South Channel on Saturday. Levy’s final concerts are announced. He leaves for Sydney at the end of the week. The opening of the Ararat and Hamilton railway as far as Dunkeld is definitely fixed for the 3rd. The annual commemoration of the Melbourne University took place on Saturday in the presence of his Excellency the Governor and Lady Bowen. The steamship Northumberland left Plymouth for Melbourne on the 31st March.

In the Supreme Court to-day, application was made to restrain the Steam Navigation Board from, enforcing the suspension of the certificate of John Dykes, second engineer of the Cheviot. The • Board had charged him with negligently causing damage to the boiler of the vessel, by not ascertaining the height of water in the boiler while steam was being raised, on 2nd March. The ground of the present application was, that accused had not been served with a proper statement of the case upon which the investigation was held. The Court reserved judgment. The Supreme Court has granted a rule nisi for leave to appeal to the Privy Council in the case Langton v. Syme. Liddy, the publisher of the theatrical bill, the “ Coquette,” has been fined £5, and £2 2s. costs, for having an unregistered press and types in his possession. Wheat is firmer at 6s. 3d. to 6s. Gd.; flour, £l3 17s. 6d. to £l4 ; maize is scarce, at 3s. Bd. There is good inquiry for Hennessy’s case brandy, likely to lead to business. There is also a large demand for kerosene, prices for which have an upward tendency. Adelaide, April 9.

The combination between the Banks has been broken through, and the Union Bank intends reducing its rates for deposits. Next Saturday, Monday, and Tuesday are the days fixed for the AU-England Cricket Match.

Wheat has been sold at 6s. sid., and has an upward tendency.
