(per press agency.) Auckland, Monday. In the Supreme Court to-day, William Gibbons, aged 18, charged with indecent assault on a girl aged 8, was found guilty and sentence was deferred. Peter McGrath, for brutally beating his wife, received three years’ penal servitude. Eliza Simmons, charged with receiving stolen property, was acquitted.. During the proceedings a juryman named. Benjamin McKerrah escaped. He was fined £3. The down train to Mercer on Saturday collided with a number of cattle, which were killed. The train ran off the line, but no passengers were injured, and it was restored, to the line and proceeded on after half-an-il our’s delay. A ship and a barque passed the Bay of. Islands, supposed to be the Electra and the Emily Chaplain, from London. The Kurunui Hill gold-carrying leader cut in 640 ft. in rich patches. The leader is a small one in the Long Drive ground. The shares rose to 505., but fell to 30s. Grahaiistown, Monday. The Moanataiari returns for last week are 553 ounces. Shares have receded to £l6 cum dividend, the latter being £2 10s. Gold has been struck in the Piako (formerly Bright Smile) at a depth of 456 feet. This intelligence was followed by news of gold being struck in the Pumping Association’s low level,' in the ground of the Kurunui Hill Company. There is great excitement over the latter event, and shares have risen. Shortland and Grahamstown had a competitive hose and reel practice on Saturday. Heavy rain fell. Weather still W ln the Supreme Court R. A. Buchanan late clerk of Akaroa E.M. Court, was charged with embezzlement. From the evidence given it appeared that Buchanan received for acting as clerk of Court, Customs officer, and postmaster the sum of £l2O per year. Ihe books of the Court showed that they had been kept in a very curious manner. The jury returned a verdict of not guilty. Judge Johnston, in discharging Buchanan, took occasion to refer to the°lo(Tse manner in which some of the Government departments are conducted in country districts. He said it would be well if a stricter supervision were kept over them generally than appears to be the case at present. His Honor thought this could be done by a periodical visit of inspection being made by an officer of the Government. — Nathan Powell, convicted of horsestealing, was sentenced to three years. Oamaru, Monday. There is a feeling of dissatisfaction at the decision of the stewards at the late race meeting when Fishhook was disqualified. O Brien to-day sent a letter to the stewards, asking them to reconsider their decision. A meeting of the stewards thereupon took place to consider the letter. After considerable discussion, in which it was pointed out that even though O’Brien could show that his Jockey was to blame he must be held responsible for the act of his servant, it was resolved, —That this meeting does not deem it necessary to review the decision arrived at at once on the course. Invercargill, Monday. • The dwellinghouse of Richard Grove, the property of N. Newell, was destroyed by fire . on Sunday morning. _ It was_ unoccupied at the time, and undergoing repairs. It was insured in the South British for £l5O.
