The object of this Company is to work a coalmining lease of 800 acres, situated at Waimangaroa Basin, Mount Rochfort coalfield, near Westport. The ground comprised in this lease has been very carefully selected from three prospecting areas of 5000 acres, and about £IOOO has been expended in obtaining the lease, prospecting, surveys, and other works necessary to prove the mine. In reference to this lease, Mr. R. B. Denniston, Government Coal Viewer, in his evidence given before the Royal Commission at Westport, says:—“The total tonnage in this lease, including the east and west slopes, is about 3,600,000 tons, the coal being of the best quality.” The report of analysis of coal from this part of the field at Woolwich Dockyard shows that it is equal to the best north of England coal for steam purposes (Vide Admiralty report on Nelson coal presented to the Nelson Provincial Council, March 16, 1866). The railway is completed and open for traffic from Westport to Waimangaroa, and the Wellington Coal Company have made a branch line of one mile five chains in length up the river, and from this point it is proposed to make a tramway to the coal, about two miles in length. The Government coal waggons will be loaded at end of tramway line, thence forwarded over Government railway to Westport, where there is now building railway wharf, station, sidings, and a largo viaduct and coal staiths, from which the coal will be shipped direct into the vessels. The port of Westport offers great facilities for shipping, the average depth of water on the bar being 12 to 15 feet; and it is expected when the protective works, now in course of construction, are completed the depth will be increased to from IS to 20 feet. By careful computation it has been estimated that the cost of opening up and connecting the mine with the Government railway, including all necessary plant, will not exceed £15,000, and further, the coal can be shipped free on board at Westport at Bs. per ton. The terms of the lease will compel the Company to have the mine in working order early in 1878, so that shareholders may rely on having returns for their money within twelve mouths. Prospectuses and forms of application for shares may be obtained at the offices of the undersigned, where a sample of the coal may be seen. LADD & CO., Agents. QAUTION TO THE PUBLIC Since the introduction of UDOLPHO WOLFE’S SCHNAPPS it has become, through its wonderful medicinal merits, the most largely consumed spirit in this market, and it therefore is not surprising that it has been IMITATED AND COUNTERFEITED. Purchasers should use the greatest caution or they will have a SPURIOUS AND CHEAPER Article palmed off on them as the GENUINE SCHNAPPS. Some unprincipled people are retailing a compound of their own manufacture which they sell under the name of “ WOLFE’S ” SCHNAPPS. We therefore strongly advise purchasers to protect themselves, and buy only ORIGINAL UNOPENED BOTTLES OR CASES, And thus secure the full advantages of this EXTRAORDINARY MEDICAL BEVERAGE. Every genuine bottle bears a label with our name thereon. M. MOSS <fc CO., Sole Wholesale Agents for Australia and New Zealand, Sydney. JACOB JOSEPH & CO., Willis-street, Wellington, Sole Agents for Wellington and neighboring provinces. EDIARD’S KNICKERBOCKER SCHNAPPS Is an ABSOLUTELY ORIGINAL PREPARATION. Its owner claims for it no relative or comparative merits, but that it is NE PLUS ULTRA and the large and increasing demand for it in this colony is a proof that the people understand its virtues, and will continue to use it EXCLUSIVELY ON ITS OWN MERITS, KNICKERBOCKER AROMATIC SCHNAPPS. The MOST RELIABLE and SAFE DRINR during hot weather. The BEST STIMULANT for the coining season. The VERY PUREST beverage distilled. JOSEPH NATHAN AND CO., Agents foi Wellington. N. J. ISAACS, Sale Wholesale Agent for New Zealand. HUXLEY, the Tailor of Manners-street and Lambton-quay, is much disappointed at the result of the late City Election, because if the election had gone the other way, he had some thoughts of putting up for the office of Mayor next time. In addition to making the best suits of clothes at £4 10s., he has a very great desire to give an abundant supply of water. In taking a quiet walk during the holidays, his thoughts ran in this wise : How much the Creator has done for this place, and how little man has done. Here is a spoi that would make a grand reservoir, holding thousands of tons of water, just like the one at Massilon, Ohio, that cost only a very small sum of money, and very little work; besides giving the inhabitants a plentiful supply all the year round, there is enough to keep going four or five large flour mills. He don’t dislike making £4 10s. suits, because he is sure that no ®ne else can give such good value foi the money, but still there are other and greater tilings yet to do.
