Fulton, Esq., Westport W. Evans, Esq., Timaru J. W. Humphrey, Esq,, Westport A. Macrae, Esq., Hokitika J. Gilmer, Esq., Westport R. Rowlands, Esq., Westport; and C. G. Andrews, Esq., Westport. The object of this Company is to work a coalmining lease of 800 acres, situated at Waimangaroa Basin, Mount Rochfort coalfield, near Westport. The ground comprised in this lease has been very carefully selected from three prospecting areas of 5000 acres, and about £IOOO has been expended in obtaining the lease, prospecting, surveys, and other works necessary to prove the mine. In reference to this lease, Mr. R. B. Denniston, Government Coal Viewer, in his evidence t given before the Royal Commission at West- ! port, says:—“The total tonnage' in this lease, including the east and west slopes, is about 3,600,000 tons, the coal being of the best quality.”' The report of analysis of coalfrem this part of the field at Woolwich Dockyard shows that it is equal to the best north of England coal for steam purposes (Vide Admiralty report on Nelson coal presented to the Nelson Provincial Council, March 16, 1866). • The railway is completed and open for traffic from Westport to Waimangaroa, and the Wellington Coal Company have made a branch line of one mile five chains in length up the river, and from this point it is to make a tramway to the coal, about two miles in length. The Government coal waggons will be loaded at end of tramway line, thence forwarded over Government railway to Westport, where there is now building railway wharf, station, sidings, and a large viaduct and coal staiths, from which the coal will be shipped direct into the vessels. The port of Westport offers great facilities for shipping, the average depth of water on the bar being 12 to 16 feet; and it is expected when the protective works, now in course of construction, are completed the depth will be increased to from 18 to 20 feet. By careful computation it has been estimated that the cost of opening up and connecting the mine with the Government railway, including all necessary plant, will not exceed £15,000, and further, the coal can be shipped free on board at "\Vestport at Bs. per ton. The terms of the lease will compel the Company to have the mine in working order early in 1878, so that shareholders may _ rely on having returns for their money within twelve months. Prospectuses and forms of application for shares may be obtained at the offices of the undersigned, where a sample of the coal may be seen. LADD & CO., Agents.
