The Waimrapa. Sl/mdard copies the New Zealand Times’ report of the proceedings at ‘ lie recent annual meeting of members of the Wellington Chamber of Commerce, and in reference to- what Captain Thomas said makes the following remarks, which we publish for general ■ information, but which we think Captain Thomas can fully answer With reference to the, explanation of Captain Thomas we beg to state first, that. the number of accounts paid was; 87 not five: second, that the bankrupt kept books ; third, that the amount of book debts was altogether misrepresented to the Chamber of Commerce; fourth; that £270 worth, not £3O worth, was paid previous to their being, advertised ; fifth, that Captain Thomas . was fully aware of the above facts. Mr. Hunter, the Chairman of the Chamber of Commerce, is a man of honor, and we. offer to give him proof of all we assert, so that the question of not ‘who Frank Mountain is,' but who Captain Thomas is, may be determined. Either Captain Thomas’ statement has been misreported,- or Capta’n Thomas has knowingly and wilfully deceived the Chamber of .Commerce, and obtained a vote of confidence under false pretences. For the honor of the Chamber, lor;the honor of Capt. Thomas, and for the credit of Grey town, we would like the matter cleared up. Grey town considered itself aggrieved.by Captain Thomas, and appealed to the Chamber of Commerce. Captain Thomas gave an explanation which is believed in Greytown to be at variance with, facts. We offer to prove to-the Chamber of Commerce that such is the case. Will our offer be accepted, and the mystery cleared up ? If not, a stigma will rest not only on Captain Thomas but on the Chamber which has given him a Vote of confidence. Captain Thomasj-in-his-explanation, casts a slur on Mr; Mountain; a respectable -tradesman, whose name headed the requisition. It is not, however; Mr. Mountain, but all Greytown which demands that the truth in this matter should be"sifted out. ""Cfiptain Thomas challenges the respectability - of the residents of We'challenge the honor and res-, pectability Cf 'Captam Thomas, and we give the Chamber the opportunity' of deciding impartially between the former and the latter.’’
The few remarks made in the New Zealand Times - of :: 'Saturday concerning municipal arrangements have excited a certain amount of comment: That comment has taken the direction of encJeaVorinig to lead the public on to a false scent by means of allegations of Wrongdoing in quarters, quite distinct, from those'this' paper' pointed to.'. NoW 'we desire to be- distinctly- -understood • fii this matter. For reasons best known to certain people there is but one newspaper in Wellington that can point to the thorough blots in municipal administration which at present exist. That paper is the New Zealand Times. And let dependence be placed bn the statement that the blots shall be pointed out. .
